Can I apply for a UK visa during the COVID pandemic?

15 June 2020 Written by Support Category: News & Announcements

The coronavirus pandemic has ground the world to a halt, leaving many people stuck in limbo when it comes to understanding their rights about residency and travel in the UK.

With the UK government’s focus being on containing the virus and ensuring its eventual decline, you could be forgiven for wondering where this leaves visa applications – and whether or not you will be able to apply for one over the coming months. We’re here to break down the government’s new outlines and make sure you have the information you need to determine your next steps.

So, let’s start with the obvious question: can I apply for a Visa during the COVID pandemic? Unfortunately, it’s not quite as simple as a yes or no answer. This varies based on who you are, your country of origin and your reason for coming to the United Kingdom.

If you’re outside of the UK

Some visa application services are slowly beginning to reopen, but you will need to check with your local authority to get more information. This is TLS Contact if you’re in Europe, Africa or some areas of the Middle East, and VFS Global for all other countries. If you registered your visa application prior to COVID restrictions being put in place, you should be contacted by the relevant authority about your application soon.

Some Visa Application Centres (VCA) are beginning to re-open and will have more information about English Language Tests and the returning of crucial documents as they open up to applicants again.

If you are a British national living abroad, you can still apply for a passport online. However, if you’re advised to visit a VAC, you must check if the location closest to you is open. If not, you will not be able to apply for a British passport until the site opens again.

For those applying for an Innovator, Global Talent or Start-Up visa, you may still be eligible, even if your endorsement has expired. It’s advised that you apply as normal; each application will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

If your 30-day visa (used to work, study or join family) has expired, you are eligible to request a replacement visa with revised dates, free of charge. You must contact the Coronavirus Immigration Help Centre to do this.

If you’re inside the UK

If you are currently a resident in the UK and your visa expires, it will be automatically extended until the 31st July 2020 if you’re unable to leave due to COVID restrictions or self-isolation.

If you’re planning to remain as a resident in the UK in the long term, you are able to switch to that visa through an online application. Many locations where visa applications are reviewed are currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but you should be contacted as they start to reopen about the status of your visa application.

For those who are working for the NHS on a visa, some of these have been automatically extended for front line workers. There is an extensive list of which professions have had their visas extended, though you should check with your employer as to whether you qualify to remain in the United Kingdom.

Conclusion

So, to answer the question – can I apply for a visa during the COVID pandemic? Yes, if you apply online. However, every application and request is different and you will likely need to research what affect the pandemic will have on your specific visa application.
